CNN —The Arizona Senate on Wednesday will vote on legislation to repeal the state’s 160-year-old near-total abortion ban, three weeks after the state Supreme Court revived the law and thrust reproductive rights into the political spotlight. Katie Hobbs signs it, as expected, it would clear the way for the state’s 15-week limit to remain state law. On April 9, the state Supreme Court ruled that the ban should be the state law. Abortion rights advocates are also gathering signatures for a ballot initiative to enshrine abortion rights into the state constitution. Several Arizona House members, including House Speaker Ben Toma, spoke out against the repeal last week.

They’ll also have a chance to vote directly on the abortion ban the court has revived – abortion rights groups are currently in the signature gathering process, which has gained a new level of urgency. He added that he would not sign a federal abortion ban if one was passed through Congress. Katie Hobbs to “come up with an immediate common sense solution that Arizonans can support.” She also said she’s opposed to a federal abortion ban. Since then, abortion rights have proven to be a driving issue nationwide. Arizona is one of nearly a dozen states that could have an abortion rights measures on the November ballot.

Betty Rollin, a network news correspondent who described intensely personal life passages in two memoirs — “First, You Cry,” about being diagnosed with breast cancer and having a mastectomy, and “Last Wish,” in which she revealed that she had helped her pain-ravaged mother end her life — died on Nov. 14 in Basel, Switzerland. She was 87. The cause was voluntary assisted suicide, at Pegasos, an assisted dying service, said Ellen Marson, a close friend, who disclosed the death to The New York Times on Thursday. Ms. Rollin had been dealing with pain from arthritis and a gastrointestinal condition, she said, and had been brokenhearted since the death of her husband, Harold Edwards, a mathematician, in 2020. “Betty recently told a few close friends she was going to do this,” Ms. Marson wrote in an email.

Ukraine’s 47th Mechanized Brigade was equipped with Western armored vehicles and trained for a lightning summer counteroffensive that was supposed to tip the war firmly in Kyiv’s favor. These days, after advancing only a few miles over several months in the south, the brigade is fighting to fend off a Russian attack on a small industrial city in eastern Ukraine.

DNIPRO, Ukraine—The number of Ukrainians being killed by Russian invaders has stretched resources at Morgue No. All but two of a dozen body bags lay on the floor at the rear entrance one recent morning because there weren’t enough gurneys. Forensic pathologist Vitaliy Levchenko picked his way through them, hands resting in the pockets of his white lab coat. Levchenko, 36 years old, found a shortcut at the start of the war when morgues were overwhelmed. He started snapping photos of dead soldiers’ front teeth if they were intact.

Here are the key election night takeaways on a strong night for Democrats:As Ohio goes, so goes the nation? Tuesday night’s election results probably won’t change the equation for Biden in 2024, given Ohio’s recent presidential electoral history. Other state Republican parties might not be so lucky. Andy Beshear won a second term on Tuesday in a state that Trump carried by more than 25 points in 2020. Endorsed by Trump but often described as McConnell’s protégé, Daniel Cameron’s defeat will stir a lot of finger-pointing within the Republican Party.

The Lancet drone is playing a key role on the battlefield for Russia. KYIV, Ukraine—One of the scourges of Ukraine’s counteroffensive is an exploding drone with distinctive X-shaped wings that smashes into targets at more than 100 miles an hour. In recent months, Russia’s Zala Lancet drone has repeatedly struck and disabled Ukraine’s Western-supplied armored vehicles that were supposed to break through Russian lines and turn the war decisively in Ukraine’s favor, according to Ukrainian soldiers and officials as well as videos posted on Russian social media.

Photo Illustration: Jeremy Shuback/WSJKYIV, Ukraine—The commander of Ukraine’s armed forces says the war with Russia is at risk of becoming a stalemate and Kyiv would need a major upgrade in weapons and technological capabilities to regain the initiative. In an interview and essay for the Economist, Gen. Valeriy Zaluzhniy, Ukraine’s top military commander, said the war was entering a new phase of “static and attritional fighting, as in the First World War.”

When Ukrainian armored vehicles breached the main Russian defensive line in southeastern Ukraine last month, it raised hopes for a decisive breakthrough. It hasn’t happened. Instead, nearly five months into the counteroffensive, Ukrainian infantry are still toiling forward in small groups along tree lines packed with Russian trench systems and mines while under fire from artillery and explosive aerial drones.

TORUN, Poland—The first time that Kateryna Lihusha fled a murderous Kremlin effort to tighten its grip on Ukraine, it was 1932 and she was a baby in her mother’s arms. Her parents ran to the eastern Ukrainian city of Horlivka from a nearby village where Soviet security officials were seizing grain. Many of her relatives who stayed would die of hunger.

A corn field waiting to be harvested near Defiance in Shelby County, Iowa, one of the counties on the route of Summit Carbon Solutions' proposed pipeline. REUTERS/Lucas Jackson/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 22 (Reuters) - Iowa residents living along the route of the U.S.'s largest proposed carbon capture and storage (CCS) pipeline told state regulators they were worried about possible ruptures and land takings at the start of a hearing that will determine the fate of the project. The hearing, which could last weeks, is a major test for the $5.5 billion pipeline proposed by Iowa-based Summit Carbon Solutions, and for CCS, which the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden sees as a critical tool in fighting climate change. Jessica Marson told the board she feared the pipeline could rupture and that its construction could harm her 80 acres of cropland. Summit told Reuters it has secured agreements from nearly 75% of residents along its Iowa route, accounting for 499 miles, and that it is working to sign on the 480 remaining landowners.
